Former Chilean President Pinera Dies in Helicopter Crash
Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, 74, tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in the Los Rios area of southern Chile. The conservative billionaire was one of four passengers in the chopper, with three surviving and deemed “out of danger.”
The cause of the crash remains uncertain, with reports indicating rainfall at the time. Chilean navy recovered Pinera’s body.
President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning, adding to ongoing mourning for deadly forest fires. Pinera served two non-consecutive terms as president, from 2010 to 2014 and again in 2018-2022.
